There were many things that led to the beginning of the Civil War. Different political, economic, and social things led to it happening. Some of those things were the Missouri Compromise, the Kansas Nebraska Act, and The Dred Scott Decision,
The Missouri Compromise- This compromise between the Northern and Southern states ruled that slavery would be legal anywhere below the 36' 30° parallel, causing a clear divide between the states. This was the first official divide between the states, allowing for the two sides to become more and more separate in many different ways.
The Kansas Nebraska Act- This act was a long term cause of the war because it reversed the Missouri Compromise, and now slavery could possibly be legal above the 36' 30° parallel, causing a rush to populate Kansas and Nebraska territories with more of both anti slavery and pro slavery settlers; causing major conflict between the two, and causing tensions to rise overall between the North and the South.
The Dred Scott Decision- This Supreme Court Decision ruled that African Americans were unable to be citizens therefore unable to be free in any territory, and also ruled that the federal government was unable to ban slavery in any territory, causing the Kansas Nebraska Act to be unconstitutional. This caused tensions between the North and South to rise even more because the reason the Supreme Court made this decision was because the majority of them were from slave holding families. The Northern states refused to accept this decision further separating the the North from the South.

After tensions rose from long term effects, there were a number of different things that finally triggered the war to start. Some of these things include Lincoln's Election, the Secession of Southern states, and the battle at Fort Sumter.
Lincoln's Election- After Lincoln was elected President, States started to secede from the Union, with a goal to form there own nation. By the time Lincoln was inaugurated, seven states had already seceded from the Union. Lincoln declared that this secession was illegal and said he would go to war for the preservation of the federal Union.
The Secession of Southern States- When states started seceding from the Union this marked the development of war. After South Carolina started the secession, and Lincoln declared it illegal, it was evident that war was approaching. If no states had seceded from the Union, than there would have been nobody for the Union to fight against.
Battle at Fort Sumter- After the Confederate Army showed up at a Union base and demanded the evacuation of it, the Civil War started. After the Union General at the base refused, and the Confederate Army started to open fire on the base, there was no turning back, it was war.
